Responsible Sport Parents and Coaches try to keep their children’s and athlete's “Emotional Tanks” full. A person’s “Emotional Tank” is like a car’s gas tank; when it’s full they can go most anywhere, but when it’s empty they go nowhere.
The “fuel” for a youth athlete’s Emotional Tank should be a mix of 5:1- five specific, truthful pieces of praise for each piece of specific, constructive criticism.

You may be wondering what we mean by “Responsible Coach”. It’s easier to start by saying what a Responsible Coach is not, which is soft, a source of empty/unearned praise or satisfied with everyone just having fun.
We asked the experts at Responsible Sports: what can we, the community of Responsible Sport Parents, do to help reverse this trend? The answer may lie in the Positive Coaching Alliance principle of the Emotional Tank.
Tryouts can be tough not only for the athletes, but for their parents and coaches as well. Parents may find it difficult to console a child who has failed to make a team. Likewise coaches often dread “the cut”, informing athletes that gave their all that they just didn’t make it.
Athlete’s injuries are an unfortunate part of sports. However, like so many other aspects of sports, injuries provide “teachable moments.” These are opportunities for Responsible Coaches to use misfortune or adversity to teach life lessons and cultivate character.
